Hello my name is Marcelo and my advice to you is very simple.
Two years ago I get into college because I want to learn 3D. But I been frustated because I couldn't learn from anything from college. Unitl I found Digital Tutors website. so Here is my advice.
First Start learning drawing This is very important. second learn as much as you can Anatomy for artist. What ever you want to do in 3D will start in a drawing Pad once you get all the story board or de character design then you can start modeling, animating or what every you can imagine in CG world. So be aware of that.
Digital tutor it's a great way of learning because this guys really teach what other can't they have the hability to show you an easy way of mastering the tools that you need.

Be patient, analize the structure or your characters or your models, take your time to do your home work and research about drawing, anatomy, about painting, lightning, etc.

Good luck to you and welcome to the mos excite field in the world.

Don't forget your pencil and drawing pad will be for ever your best friend before touching a computer.

Hi breakanate...
well to be honest, i did the different route from digitalmcm above...
My point is... give me a pencil and im totally useless with it! I cant draw ****! I agree that you will be a better "artist" if you can,
BUT
I also believe that you can be a brilliant CG artist in Maya, even if you cant draw...
and the way to do it, is with DIGITAL TUTORS mate,

straight forwardly, THESE GUYS ARE GREAT.

I have only one piece of advice for you... AND DO IT!
buy the: Digital Tutors - Basics: Introduction to Maya (Second Edition)
(u will know what to get next after this)
It has done miracles for me! and i am extremely sure it would do to anyone else...

Hope u give it a try.
Regards
