Hey This is frustrating, I tried a effects with plain text, nothing. then I used an adjustment layer and it worked...FINE. my question is this
When do you use ADJUSTMENT LAYER and when do you use a PRE-COMP LAYAER.
Also when using an adjustment layer, I want to add, a different effect to a new layer without the other layes being effected by my first adjustment layer...
Broken from the BRONX.... :help

i assume your talking about Photoshop!
You don't have to apply an adjustment layer you can effect only the layer by going to Image > Adjustments and that way it will only effect the layer itself and none of the underlying layers.
You can also use layer styles to the layer, drop shadows and such.
I'm not sure if this helped, I might have misunderstood the question

Adjustment layers in After Effects are similar to Photoshop in that they apply whatever effects are put to them to all the underlying layers. However, unlike Photoshop, you can't apply them to just one layer. Its not really necessary though, because when you apply a filter/effect in AE you can go back and change it indivdually anyway - which is kind of the point of adjustment layers in Photoshop.
To answer your question, a great example of when to use adjustment layers is when you apply NTSC colors to your whole project when you're done (to make sure it's alright for broadcast). Simply add an adjustment layer to the top and add the effect. I try to stay away from pre-comping as much as possible. Of course, sometimes you can't get around it, but I find its easier to work if I have everything in front of me (for more complex projects where you have hundreds upon hundreds of layers, simply hide the layers you're not working with to clean up your timeline).
