can anyone please!!! help me

I have been working on this project for the past 2 years, and the rendering of the images(all still images, no animation) seemed to go fine until recently,
this specific image Im trying to render is 3638 x 2740, (which I have been doing all the time) rendering with Maya software, its a night scene and I have set up a pointlight with lightglow,, the thing is that it never used to give me problems,
lately when I open the scene and render, Maya just simply dissapears,, it closes as if I never had it open, also when I make any changes, like adjust the lighting, it also closes the program as I hit the render button,, when I open the scene again( as I have learnt to save before hitting the render button) it renders but the lightglow doesnt appear, and when I close the renderview it says the render has been aborted,, but it seemed to have finished, I get the following error msg in the Script editor:

// Error: image has unsupported number of bytes per channel: 255 //
// Error: Output format does not support depth. Ignoring z-buffer //
// Error: Failed to open output file: C:/Documents and Settings/Len/My Documents/maya/projects/Toby/images/Pg46-47_Toby_and_friends_rescue_Larry_Lorry_perspShape_tmp.tif //
// Error: An error has occurred. Rendering aborted. //

I have tried everything,, I have imported the entire scene into a new one, I have cleaned out my render folder, I have done a disc cleanup, as well as a defrag,, and I also have tried to reinstall Maya.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be,, I'm freaking out here!!

Thanx for your reply,
I know this must sound pretty stupid but can you explain where I change the bytes per channel, I have looked everywhere(I'm using Maya 5), I can find no place in the renderGlobals where I can change the settings manually. or am I looking in the wrong place?

ummm... I might be wrong but try your settings/preferences it might be in there. Good luck.

Ok, I might be a problem with the temp files so first try this. Take your scene file and move it somewhere, say the desktop. Then take another file you have, and copy it to the same location the other file originally was. Then rename the copied file to the same name as the original file. Open that file and hit render.

If that doesn't work go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Temp

and

C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data

and start moving anything that seems like it has something to do with maya some other folder (make a new one) just so you have a backup of it, though you probably won't need it. Then try to render, or try the above again.

BTW, can you render other files, or is it just that one?

thanx, will try what you said.
what happens is the following:
I open the scene, I have a pond with wave emitter, I set the lighting acording to the time of day in the scene, then I set the characters in the right places, once I have done that I save the scene, (new scene, new name) then I hit the play button so that the waves are across the whole scene. I hit stop and then render, at first this worked fine with no problems, but lately everytime I hit render after making a minor adgustment, i.e lights then when I hit render Maya gives me and error that the app had to close down. when I open it again, and play the waves, and hit render,,,, then it works fine,, but as soon as I make a slight change, and hit render it gives me the error, this happens on all of the images, not specific ones.
