hi

After seeing the comparatively slow rendering speed with MR for quite some time, and other renderers comming out on the market quite regularly, what is about MR, that people like, as far as i can tell it is one of the slowest to render compared to, for example Turtle, Vray or maybe even Maxwell?!?

Yes, ok it is in all of the big three (or two if you count Maya as now autodesk), and if u have the time it does produce good quality renders, but i have been recently talking with a chum, whio preferes XSI, and while talking him through a way of setting up one of the fast SSS shaders he seem it stupid that we had to connect lightmaps about, saying that XSI does it for u?!? So is the Maya MR rubbish somehow cos with the DT MR kit good renders were apparent but again, rendered slowly.

Im sorry if people see this as a vent, its not supposed to be i just want faster good quality renders really :)

Any comments discussion appreciated

We are evaluating maxwell and it is slow. We are using it with our renderfarm and it still is a thinker. It isn't near as fast as MR nor as intergrated. Have you looked at renderman for maya. When renderman for maya studo (pro) comes out it will be very powerful.

You might also look at setting up your Maya Sat. for mental ray. This will allow you to connect to 4 systems if you have Maya complete and 8 if you have unlimited to render your frames.

Also what version of Maya are you using. Maya 8 has the newer version of MR which is faster.

hi papa,

cheers for the reply,

i do have 8 but i am primerily using maya and max for moddeling/texturing at work so i dont really get too much time to experiment with new features etc...

If maxwels is as slow as u say, slower than MR, then that is obviously not for me, but i may try renderman if there is a demo on Pixars site.

Are there any plans for a Turtle kit, as i dont believe that they have released V-Ray for maya yet? Or have you or anyone else had any experience with it as the list of cliest on thier sit is quite impressive

Cheers

hi

I have just watched your slightly older vid on Turtles ambient occlusion and that seems very imoressive that it is quite so fast.

Im still interested in it for the speed, and also the vast amount of outputs it seems the be able to do especialy looking at the new list in version 3, not sure how many are new but still impressive.

I hope to hear more about the Turtle DT kit if there is one and i will look into renderman some more.

cheers
