As far as i know there is no way to lock the view inside of max. You could try switcher (http://draster.com/component/page,shop.product_details/flypage,software-flypage/product_id,18/option,com_virtuemart/) which duplicates the navigation from maya into max.
Another way which doesn't involve a third party plug in would be to remember that you can always undo the current action by clicking on the right mouse button <- helps a lot.

i tried the switcher before its great plugin and tried nex also in maya. If they only implement an option to switch navigation from maya to max or vice versa. oh well will just have to get used to it. Thanks anyways! :)

right let me get this straight. You have orthographic you cannot lock it down But why would you need to lock them down?
if you left click and freeze selection then this will lock down your image if the image is grayed out then you need to left click go down to properties uncheck show frozen in gray and click ok.

i want to lock it so i don't accidentally rotate that view for example the front view with the bg image on it when you accidentally rotate the front view it goes to like a perspective view the bg image doesn't match up to your model..what i do is hit "f" to reset it to front view again. Thats why i want to lock those views. And i cannot select the bg image i use the alt + b to load the bg images in front and side views.

you don't need to lock it if you follow my instructions and freeze it in all views apart from the perspective view your image will not rotate because it's frozen

i cannot select my image plane. how do you set up your image planes? i set up mine in views>viewport background>viewport background.

your not meant to load the images in the environment. Your meant to load them up in the viewports.
press alt and the B key and choose the file in background sources look in use the drop down menu select the images you want to load into the viewport in type of file choose Jpeg. then load them into the viewports if you have 3 photo for example. you load the top photo in the top view, the front in the front view and the left in the left view and do as i said above.
I would also surgest you do the tutorials that come with max

that is how i set up my image planes and no i didn't load them in the env. Here i attached pics for better view. Image 1 is the front view without accidentally rotating the view then image 2 if i accidentally rotate the front view and image 3 is the settings of the image planes if that matters. You said freeze the image plane how? i can't even select the image plane. The only thing im able to freeze is the model.

hi
not a max user myself but can you key frame the camera on those views!, if so the next time you rotate just move the time slider to get back to the original camera position.

@hornet1958
thanks for the tip but no need since i can hit the "f" key to revert it to front view if i accidentally rotate the view. My main goal here is to find out if there is a way to not be able to rotate to those views. I am a maya user so if you use maya you know when you load an image plane on ortho views the rotate function is disabled.

then go back to maya because Max and Maya are two different programs unless you do the tutorials that come in max you won't know how to use it

i just told you why you cannot lock the rotation and how it is the same? if you look in the environment you notice the images are not loaded there. with my image you notice the you can only rotate it with the arch rotates and not the normal rotation on the top toolbar you can only move the image in the arch rotate on the bottom right tool ba but this does not rotate it, max will only move it side to side

I was unaware that Autodesk still had a 2009 trial version available. I thought they did away with that when they switched to the 2010 trial a little while back. Anyway, I haven't used Max as extensively as I've used Maya, but when I have used Max it seems that there are many things that are different than Maya. As libertycityanimation says, they're different programs...so expect some differences. It takes some getting used to, but that's part of learning a new piece of software. I remember when I was learning Maya and Photoshop how often I'd hit the space bar in Photoshop and wonder why the hotbox wasn't popping up. :D

I think i am just confuse how max works since i came from maya. Need alot of time to adjust in this program.
@danlefeb
I downloaded the 2009 like a month or two just installed it this week. A lot of difference in those two programs especially the navigation alt middle mouse in max is rotate that why instead i want to pan i rotate my views accidentally hehe.but i'll get used to it someday.

someday the demo version you only have 30 days on it. People have been using max for over ten years and they are still not used to the program they are learning use stuff everyday in max

Indeed. That was the first issue I had switching from Maya to Max (used to use Max in a previous job). Once you play with it for a while you'll get used to it, though.
