I am new to Maya and wondering, when using image references in side, front views etc. after tracing curves with cv curve tool, the curves you make are flat on those planes. What then do you do to create a 3D model of your curves.

sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm new.

You usually would want to enter CV (control vertex) mode and tweak each CV from different angles with the assistance of the image references so its not 2D or flat but 3D and represents your model.
With the curves, you have a few options. If you have enough of them, you might be able to use surface commands like loft, extrude and birail to make your geometry. You can also use the curves as guidelines as opposed to using them directly for modeling. This training kit goes over that technique of modeling

P.S you can enter control vertex mode by right-clicking your curve and you'll see the option in the marking menu.

Thanks for the quick response, I'll try that.
