Here are some of my lighting test for the scene. Basically I'm just going with a basic treasure chest with gold, diamonds, pearls (black/white) and a gold dagger.

I just need to add some cloud cover then work on beach debri.

Nice concept, metryx. Though I can't help but wonder how big the waves might have been to throw a crate full of treasure on shore ;)

Glad you asked Dj, nothing short of a category 5 Hurricane would up root this treasure and deposit it on the beach, with some other debris.

I cant help thinking I've seen that sub before;)
Nice natural lighting BTW.
In 1912 a 235 tonne boulder was washed up on rocks near Bondi beach Australia. I think a crate full of coin could make it up too.

I like the concept, though logically speaking, the waves would've smashed the wooden crate into smithereens first. In which case only the treasure would make it to the beach, mostly scattered and buried in sand with the high tide. That's why some ppl roam beaches with metal detectors, hoping to find treasure washed up by the waves :)

All right I changed some of the lighting and added the palm trees and some rocks along with large up rising in the cove or to make a cove.

I still have to find the spot were this will take place. I keep rendering in different spots and the lighting and shadows look better in other angles. I'll keep playing with it till I find what I want.

I think this would look hot around sunset with the sun visible over that middle rock. It could provide some dramatic shadows as well.

I was thinking about that last night. Having the sunset between the rocks in the background. At the moment i am working on the jewels for my chest. Having a hard time with creating lots of gold coins. Tried using the duplicate but each time I try to have the coins kind of fall into place Maya locks up then crashes. So I have to think of another way to lay the coins in the create.

you can just do a plane with a bump on it
or make coins with particles...
make few coins samples and duplicate... make it hard, do an hard surface in your chest and let it fall in the chest (not sure about how to do that since I never did it but im sure its working)
good luck to you! nice render =)

Yes, the render illustrate your idea good.

Coins using particles, is that the particle instantcer? I thought that was just for if you wanted to show multiple objects like a group of planes or soldiers and then just change certain positions and it uses your main object for reference then creates how many instantces you want. How would I get that to fill the top part of the chest with coins?
In the image you can see a gray plane in the box which I did set as passive so the coin would just drop in place. My problem is trying to duplicate 20 or more like 50 to 100 and have them drop. When I use just a regular sphere it works, but not the coins. The coin object is low poly, and has no detail except Mia Material with preset of chrome from the sun/sky light preset, I just changed the color and refraction for gold.
I put that on hold for now to finish off the pearls, emeralds and sapphires.

for the particles
I used the particle to do some things like rocks coming out of an explosion and things like that
you can do the coins like a "solid" coin and do the grey plane solid too (same for the crate) and then make the particle fall on the plane... in the chest
so it will be in your chest
Im not sure if its going to work easily and not sure about the render time too..
so wait till someone confirm my idea or test it ^^
hope it will works!

i don't know how big you're coins are going to be, but imo this close to the camera i wouldn't use a particle system but actually rigid bodies so you won't get mesh intersections. if you're having a hard time with duplicates in your scene, i would suggest saving out only the crate and the coins in a file. duplicate the coins inside the new file and make the simulation in this file. on a modern system there shouldn't be any problem with that kind of simulation and maya.

Here is my completed work. I decided to go with darker skies, per a discussion about having a chest of full of treasure wash up on shore would take a very strong storm.
