I was wondering if the free version of Softimage (XSI 6.01 Mod Tool) has all the tools I would need to be able to follow the new XSI Automotive DVD completely without any issues.
The limitations of the free version of XSI are listed here http://www.softimage.com/products/modtool/limitations.aspx
Thanks

Hello diversatile, and welcome to DT!
Personally, I have never used Mod Tool. But based on what I know about it, I believe that the only real limitation is in Mod Tool's lack of mental ray rendering features, so you won't be able to complete the lessons on lighting and material setup.
Other than that, I believe Mod Tool will let you work with polygons, curves, surfaces, SubDs, etc. But when it comes to exporting the geometry out of Mod Tool, you can only export polys, and with a 64000 polygon limit.
As an alternative to using Mod Tool, you could download the free 30-day eval of Softimage 7.5:

The eval has no restrictions, and gives you a fully functioning copy of Softimage (formerly called XSI) for 30 days. Using this, you will be able to complete the Automotive Modeling training in it's entirety.
