Hey!
One of my friend sent me this post.....so i was just woundering :eyeRoll that is it still open to participate in the contest.
I am planning to create a chessboard.

I think a nice old living room like ones in uncle tom's cabin should do the trick.

I like the fuzzy, sort of hand drawn look. It gives the set warmth. Though I guess it would flicker like a crazy if you animated it. nice modeling too. Are they textured, or is it procedural?

I agree with shamoii, sometimes botched up renders have more appeal than perfectly realistic ones.
Don't know how much flickering will happen with animation but if it's minor then After Effects can be used to fix it. If this is for a still then you can use Photoshop to take out the artifacts. Hey, it's the result that counts :)
