As I'm new to animation I would like to know what are the best software options and best methods to assemble all my rendered images into a movie file. Any advice?

I'm assuming you are talking about compositing. If so, I feel most comfortable using Fusion 5 over at www.eyeonline.com There are many options, Adobe AfterEffects, Combustion, as well as many others. I heard XSI has a sort of built in compositor. In AfterEffects you use layers, most of the other programs are node based. If you go to the fusion website they also have lots of tutorials to get you started and Fusion works great with 3D. Hope that helps.

WHen working with maya and rending images out i always use after effects to make the movie file and composite any other things into the shot with it. YOu might like apple shake over even discreet combustion!
