hi
i have been trying many many different ways of getting a car rig to work well, and also reliably, ;p
After some chats with Sunder (link below), and many attempts, this rig works,
http://www.digitaltutors.com/chit_chat/showthread.php?t=1514
the reason why the rig stopped working is that the wheels didnt have any weight, increase the weight (alot) and the springs work, repeat the rig to the rear of the car and voila!!!
Hope this helps

Hi whinnix,
since u said that u were a newbie... i want to share some ideas with u...
To begin with, before rigging any stuff, we just need to do the following...
a quick RND on the character which we are gonna rig ..i.e.
1. we should be knowing what the character is gonna do in the movie/short/shot
2. what level of rig is required for it (very important)
3. what are the resources and dependencies we have
4. what kind of controls the animator might need for animating it comfortably...
5. what type of rig is required ( cartonnish - realistic - semi realistic - super cartoonish and super realistic)
blaw blaw...
there are many other things...
but, if u r trying to learn rigging, then try to focus on the basic tools such as constrains/connections/utilities/expressions/mel/....etc. and do some experimentation on it too...
before doing a rig, do some paper work on the (character)car, like what u want the car "character" to do when u move the rigging controls .... and decide which all are required for making a rig...
there is no limit for rigging a character when you r learning cause, u might never say "ah... man .. i think this will do ".... in production - its all based on the shot.. if the character is just gonna jump around in the crowd, then a single control is enough with the single line expression for it... but if the character is seen clearly in the shot, then we need to focus on the lot of things....
squash and stretch for the character setup is essential too... but again it depends on the shot and animator's usage of controls...
i might be able to give u better solution if you can tell me some more details on the car project, u might be working on.....

I don't know if that will help you but there's a master class on car rigging if you have some experience with max you can easily apply that to maya.
