Everyone has played at least one board game in their life time. Here's your chance to CG your favorite board game.

Please download the attached Maya scene. It contains a board. You can add geometry to it, alter its width and length, but you cannot transform it to any other shape other than a board.

You may take your board game to another level and really bring it to life (hypothetically) but your end result should show that it is a board game. For example, if it's Snakes & Ladders you can create real snakes popping out of the board etc. Think of Jumanji and Zathura. Hope that makes sense.

I am not going to bind you with a preexisting scene camera for this project as you might want to explore different perspectives and camera's depth of field.

-Still images are good though animation is a plus (see voting detail below**)

Project Requirements
1. Resolution: 720x486
Note: People who are doing animation are not limited to this size, though they still need to post an image of 720x486 as a poster for their animation.

2. Create a thread under the December 2008 forum with the title of your project (December08: project), and post your progress at least three times during the month.

3. Please include a brief description of the game, its objectives, number of players, and how to play it.

4. Specify your user level with the application of choice.

5. DT provides unlimited amount of gallery space to members so please upload your final entry in any of the DT galleries. You may also upload the entry on your website or a photo sharing site but the link should be on DT under your project's thread.

Rule
- Gore and vulgarity is not allowed.

Duration
November 26th to December 30th.

Application
You can use any software covered by Digital Tutors, or a freeware 3D application like Blender.

Poll
- A poll will be posted on January 1st that is going to include all entries where members can vote for their favorite work.

** An animation project will automatically have two votes in addition to votes by DT members.

The winner of the poll will be announced in the following Digital-Tutors Newsletter, to which you can subscribe to via your DT user ID options. Please check your DT Inbox after the poll closes for any important notifications.

* DT administrators and moderators can enter this project but cannot run for the DT Newsletter polls.

Here are some examples of board games.

I want to know if the complexcity of the modeling is an advantage

I mean... My favorite board game is pretty simple to do so...
there it is [im gonna model a scene around anyway...]

thx

I would suggest to concentrate on the board game itself because even if the modeling is very simple your texturing, lighting, and rendering will factor in.

Things to consider: Dao's game pieces seem to be stones, sort of translucent. What comes to your mind if you imagine them in a fantasy world? The game itself was invented in America but it has an Asian feel to it. Perhaps creating an ancient Chinese atmosphere on it (not around it).

If u cant "transform" the board then some of the "board games" cannot be made, forinstance; Backgammon

"you cannot transform it to any other shape other than a board." meant that it has to look like a board game, so you can model Backgammon. Just add geometry on top of it for the pockets etc.

First I was surprised to see a theme like this one for the month of December but then I thought it is the way of DT doing their thing differently from all others...

Is it possible if the project description demands a text description of the board game each participant create so that people who doesn't know about them can gain some knowledge??? :dont_know

Good point. I'll include that in the requirement.

Nice animation, though you cannot enter it since the idea behind this contest is to create the project within a given time and document your progress in the forum. On the other hand, you are allowed to do a team project :)

Interesting concept for monthly project. Wish I could have joined, last couple months have been so crazy. I haven't even opened up Maya in two months, hardly even use my computer much any more. Oh well everything in its season. I will eventually get back to modeling, hopefully when I purchase a laptop.

Well guys, it's December 31st and no one has submitted a final render of their project. Since it's the holidays season and end of the year I'm assuming you were too busy to work on this. So the question is; Do you want still want a poll for whatever you have or would you rather skip it for this month?

Is there any chance the deadline could be extended a couple of days?

It can, but then how many days are needed for at least three entries?

Good question... I'm working on a chess set, and it probably won't take more than a day or two to finish. Judging by the lack of response to your question though, I don't think anyone else is going to submit. Bummer, really. I was looking forward to seeing Mousetrap in 3D!!

Attention all: Your requests have been answered. Project Board Games will continue in February, so don't ditch what you have completed so far :)

In the meantime, January's project offers you an opportunity to experiment with particles ;)
