[IMG]Hey guys!!

I've finally made some time for my own projects.... phew!! Ok this is my tornado project, and so far I only have the one main funnel almost rendered. Haven't added, dust, debris, thick dark clouds on top overing the hard edged upper part of the tornado, etc etc etc. However the motion seems to be working, I've got the particles to work they way I want them to. In this render I have used Maya fluids for the tornado. I would prefer using sprites but they just dont look that good cuz I am not doing a good job painting good sprite textures. I might give it a shot considering the render time fluids take. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, etc. Also note that I haven't done any color corrections yet but suggestions on that topic are most welcome.
Thanks guys!!

Hey guys,...

Thanks for all the good words and motivation. I'm back.. Here is my test of the main funnel particle system in action. I think I will have to learn a lot of tricks with compositing for these kinds of fx shots, as this is my first attempt to do something like this.. (I'm a medical animator, I don't really get to do things like this- for those of you who don't know me:). Any help will be highly appreciated. I just put a really cheap dark cloud layer for now, but I will hopefully have some nice detailed animated clouds. Once again, critiques are very welcome!
Thanks,
Shan

Thanks guys!!

I'm glad you guys have asked me to make a tutorial at this stage. Normally when I work on projects for myself, I start off pretty organized then I just throw files around. I'll try to keep things organized and post a tutorial when I am done. I will also show how to make slider controls using MEL to control the tornado shape, particle speed, goal speed and particle twist. I used a simple spline IK to control the movement and the bend.
Please let me know if it is too dark cuz I looked at it on my monitor and at work and it was fine, but one of my friends mentioned that it looked like a black box and it was too dark.

Thanks again guys!

It's very dark and looks great so far. I agree with evryone, a tutorial would be great. There are others online but everyone has a different approach.

Thanks for your input Crutch! Here is another test, but this one is messed up! Dark once again, lots of mud covering the detail in the main funnel at the base.

However, my revised version still looks something like this (I have reduced the darkness and brought back some blue contrast to the sky) :yes :
test_shot (http://www.tntfind.com/Tornado_test_shot.jpg )

I'm yet to add chunks of instanced objects flying around, dark moving clouds on top of the upper part of the tornado funnel. Perhaps some lightning. I wanted to add a barn or a windmill and have the tornado destroy it but I feel a bit shaky to experiment with that. I have given myself mini project deadlines for my demo reel, and I'm already stretching this one out:(
In regards to the tutorial request, I would definitely try my best to organize everything and put together a simple and functional tutorial.

Thanks again!
Shan
