greetings all!

how's things? good? good!

i haven't been working with maya for too long, but i've been interested in 3d animation ever since i saw toy story way back in '95, and so far i love playing around with these programs! however, i'm having troubles with the shadows in my scene when i turn on the depth map shadows after creating a few lights. when i look at my scene in a rendered image, the shadowing on the character looks very pixelated compared to everything else. does this have something to do with the filter settings in the light, or is there something else that needs fixing? O_o

thanks in advance for any and all help!:D

try increasing the resulotion of your shadow in the atribute editor of the light in question. its right under the option box for "Use depth map shadows"

There are two things that can help solve that problem. Increasing the filter or increasing the resolution. If you want soft shadows, keep a low resolution and a high filter. The filter just blurs the shadow by the number of pixels you type in. If you want crispt shadows you need to increase the resolution.

So when determining the resolution you need, first try 128 with no filter. From there add filter, and then increase reolution to 256. Keep doing that for 512, 1024... Render times can get much longer if you have huge depth map shadows, which usually aren't even neccesary.
