footprints in snow (maya)

hi am new to this forum....

i want to animate a character in a snowy area.. any advice about how to create the footprints behind him?
Am just learning MAYA n dis will be my first project... so I have really no idea..

i tried the tutorial of working with soft surface like snow part 1 but dont know how to use it for polygon model..... :help:
