model does not duplicate according to reset the pivot point

I am on CD 3 of Intro to Maya 2nd ed and the only problem I have had so far is in creating the right handlebar. I moved the pivot points snapping them to the grid I group both the handle and the grip but when I enter -1 in the scale the copy is skewed in a different plane instead of reflecting across the x-axis

Make sure the group pivot point is at the center or move it to the right location prior to scaling. This could be an issue of having more than the group node selected. If you are not sure select the group in the outliner.
