Was just wondering what would be the most reasonable way to model a soccer ball within Maya. I’ve heard something about making a poly sphere and changing tessellation but I am greatly confused to how I should make the patches for the Ball. If there is a way to patch together a ball using pentagonal shapes...anything really. I have been modeling for a while and I wanted to model a soccer ball for a project I am currently working on. Something better then just creating a sphere and mapping a bump texture. I heard that Maya 7 has a model of a soccer ball included but unfortunately I do not have access to Maya 7(Besides it would be kind of dumb to upgrade for just that very reason alone.) If anyone has any suggestions to go about this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Go to highend3d.com get a script called dhpolyhedron. That will make a whole bunch of different shapes.

Set it for icosahedron, itteration 1. Then select all the verticies and go to edit polygons->chamfer vertex. Change the width, and you will have a soccerball.

What version of Maya do you have? Here's a plug-in for 4.x that'll give you access to the same primitives in Maya 7.

Yup, that's one of the perks of having Maya 7. Apparently, so many people were modeling soccer balls that they had to include that in this version, I love it! :D
