hi.

i was woundering if some one can explain how to import files from maya to Realflow?

i know that the files must be saved as .obj and that it can only be trangulated polygon surfaces. problem is that when i import a file that i have done myself Realflow crashes instantly, but if i import a file that i have not done myself it works fine. i have just noticed how powerfull the program is so i would love to be able to play around with it.

thanks in advance:)

Maya can export SD files which Realflow can load. If your exported OBJ file is giving you issues, try exporting to SD.
You need to load the sdTranslator.mll plugin to be able to export SD files.

I export an SD, import it in real flow and it appears for a half a second, then nothing is visible or selectable in my work area. I tried to export as a .dxf but it just crashes real flow. Anyone know what's going on with this? Also, I get an error in Maya when trying to access the "export all" options.

The error is: "// Error: Object's name is not unique: BoxLayout"

I'm thinking that this is probably the root of the problem.

It might be something simple, but I've tried everything I could dig up and it's not working. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
p

Make sure you have a UV map on your mesh before you export it for realflow in SD. Just apply an automatic map on it.

Hey, thanks for the response... I'm pretty sure I have a uv map on the object - I created the automatic map but I didn't really do anything with it after I created it (are there any other steps needed before exporting for real flow?).

This is really weird. The only message the terminal gives me in RF is "Reading SD object", but the object never shows up in the nodes list or anywhere else. I get a CameraFromSD01 up in the nodes list for every time I attept the import, but no object, just another camera. I'm pretty sure I'm screwing it up on the maya side... Again, thanks for any tips you can offer up... I'm pretty new to some of this, so sorry about the dumb questions.

I'm thinking that I might have installed the pluggins improperly. I'm getting errors in Maya when I try to access any of the export options.

please help!

I know you said your issue was a plug-in one, but I thought I'd chime in about the "// Error: Object's name is not unique: BoxLayout." because I had the same error while trying to export animation. Apparently if you have the export options window open already you get this error. I realized this after lots of head scvratching and re-naming everything in my scene trying to find the culprit :eyeRoll. So if you open an options window for anything, and this error pops up, check to make sure the window isn't minimized or in the background already. :)
