Go to this link (http://cid-c550f543800d86a2.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/oct08.zip) , click on "Oct08.zip" or "Download" to download the scene file to your HD.

It contains one file, oct_haunted.ma for Maya users. Anyone using Blender, XSI, or any other application taught by DT please PM me if you are interested in joining. I will send you the scene file in your application's format.

Project:
The scene contains an island which is haunted.
There are three locations; volcano, swamp, graveyard. All three locations have set and locked cameras.

Pick any one of these three camera views and create a scene based upon their title in the given geometry, and within the haunted theme. For example, a person using camera_swamp will have to create a spooky swamp.

People who are doing animation are not limited to the scene's camera views or resolution. Though they still need to send me one image of 720x486 as a poster of their animation.

-Still images are good though animation is a plus (see voting detail below**)

-Render the final image through any one of the three scene cameras' view.

Rules
- You can add to the scene, include increasing the geometry and using the deform tools to modify it, but you cannot delete or move any existing objects or cameras.

- Gore and vulgarity is not allowed.

- Maya users will find all objects including the cameras locked, so there is no issue of accidentally moving something.

Duration
September 25th to October 30th.

Application
Even though the scene is in Maya's format you can use any software covered by Digital Tutors, or a freeware 3D application like Blender.

Requirements
1. Create a thread under the October 2008 forum with the title of your project (October08: project), and post your progress at least three times during the month.

2. Specify your user level with the application of choice.

3. Your final entry should be rendered through the provided scene's camera resolution, 720x486.

4. DT provides unlimited amount of gallery space to members so please upload your final entry in any of the DT galleries. You may also upload the entry on your website or a photo sharing site but the link should be on DT under your project's thread.

* Any entry uploaded as an attachment will be uploaded to MonthlyProjects_Gallery account, which will devoid the creator of that work of any comments or suggestions. In other words, it's not a good thing.

Poll
- A poll will be posted on October 31st that is going to include all entries where members can vote for their favorite work.

** An animation project will automatically have two votes in addition to votes by DT members.

The winner of the poll will be announced in the following Digital-Tutors Newsletter, to which you can subscribe to via your DT user ID options. Please check your DT Inbox after the poll closes for any important notifications.

* DT administrators and moderators can enter this project but cannot run for the DT Newsletter polls.

And here are couple of inspirational images;

Swamp (from POC2)

Volcano (ok, this isn't a very good picture but you get the idea, something dark and spooky)

Graveyard (Art work by William Tiller) yes, you can digital paint the scene as well.

An animation is not limited to the scene cameras, though it is to the resolution size -- 720x486.

I don't want to restrict you guys when it comes to creativity and exploring your skills but the important question here is whether you can create an animation affectively using all three locations in a month. If you think you can then go right ahead :)

I downloaded the file and got an error then an empty Maya file.

Did you double click to open the file in Maya? That usually gives an error. Create a new file, and then open the scene. Let me know if it still doesn't work.

Great theme and set up, it'll be fun to see the entries for this one :3 I haven't found the time to enter in any of these contests unfortunately, but Hopefully I'll find some free time for this one!

Added to the project description: People who are doing animation are not limited to the scene's camera views or resolution. Though they still need to send me one image of 720x486 as a poster of their animation.

I'll try it again. I have Maya 8.5. Is the file created w M2008, and if so, would I need to import it?

The file was created in 2008 but it's ma format so you should be able to open it in 8.5 just fine. Let me know if it doesn't work.

Check out this video if you have issues opening a file created in a newer version of Maya into an older version:

Cool. That worked. I didn't realize I was trying to open it in Maya 7 on my internet PC. My new PC has 8.5. Forgot. Now to get crackin on ideas. :)

It looks like the enthusiasm hasn't quiet started for this month yet.

I guess i will have to wait a bit longer to see what magnificent artwork will manifest from this month's theme project. ;)

Good luck all.

Glad that got sorted ;)

But thanks for bringing the version issue to my attention, guys. Even though DT has an awesome tutorial on getting around it (see above link) I'll make future scenes in an older version, just to make the project less painful on ya (just kidding) :D
