So... I think/hope I'll have the time to get into this one :-).
Very initial phase here, but you can kind of see where it's going. It already has a bit of everything in it: particles for the bubbles, ncloths for the cloths on the ship.
Lots of nurbs in there...much more than I normaly use, indeed.
Final entry will be an animation. The goal is to make something realistic and as alive as I have the time to do it. There's still quite a bit of modeling left to do.
There you go...stay close for updates :)

Hey, the volcano does look familiar. LOL, that was one the funniest bits in Finding Nemo :D

LOL... actually, I don't check it very often. :-P. Sorry about that vase contest incident  :P.
Nince remembering of that volcano. I swear I didn't get inspiration from that... and I even got a kick out of thinking about that...bah!

Hard to see, need a bit more light on the subject.

Yep, I know... that's just Maya's default lighting. I've worked a little bit more on modeling and got some textures in... still a very W.I.P.
I'm not using Maya's default lighting in this preview render: just one area light above and a fill light coming from down below.
Background is just composited in Photoshop... I'm focusing on the aquarium for now, not yet on the environment it's gonna be into in the end.
What else can I say? Hum... there are already five or six little fishes moving around, but it's gonna hard to see in this image. There is going to be one and only big fish, as the "main attraction". It's not yet completed, but the movement of the fins and everything is coming along nicely using nCloths... very organic there.

Infomaniac, your DT inbox is like your e-mail account so please check it from time to time :)
Your volcano is cool, but it's no surprise that it reminded us of the one in Finding Nemo because fish tank accessories don't vary that much in theme, e.g. there's the scuba diver, sunken ship, treasure chest, coral reef.

Activated a function over there to warn me via e-mail that I got new PM's  Easier like this :P
So...here's the animated preview sequence. I've left this rendering over night and forgot to cache the particles, which is why they aren't moving :-P. But you can see where it's going...

Obviously no work done on lighting yet. Still on the modelling (alongside animation) phase

Update: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qhSdi6g67g
So, some new things found their way there... for one, I got gravel in there.
I didn't want to go into simulation because you just can't control it very much, not at least for something like this,so I went with a particle approach, which actually is also lighter and I can use a bunch of expressions to randomize things :) . So I created an emitter, modeled a few different rocks and randomized attributes per particle like rotation, scale and the rock instanced. Voila the result I got... I think I might play a little bit more with the colors, but I'm satisfied with the variation that I got... they really look like thousands of different rocks even though they´'re actualy just about 7.
Caustics is also an addition. That's fake  ... I hate to rely only on photons of any kind and their render times (specially on animations and specially on caustics) to keep my render times low I'm using a pre-rendered caustic sequence that i made a while ago and mapped it onto a spot light (then it's just a matter of linking it to whatever's interesting)
Again, I forgot to cache the bubbles :-P. That certainly won't happen in the final render.
Now I think I'll start looking into references for the environment..I still don't know the direction I'm going, mas certainly nothing too distracting.

It's beautiful. Not sure if it's the Youtube video but the gravel seems a little too big for the tank. Other than that the caustics are working perfectly :)

Got another fish in there... I was talking to my girlfriend the other day and these two are the both of us (after a fight) just cycling around :P. No changes in the gravel yet...

Ok, so here's the final entry.... timing got pressed in the end, but it's there...

Make sure you click on "Watch in High Quality", because the normal quality sucks.

Attached you'll find an image (first frame of the movie, actually) just to showcase it here.... the final entry is the animation itself.

WELL DONE! :bang
Can you put the image on DT gallery or some other image sharing site? I will need to put it under your name as a reference to the animations.

Yes... I was testing everyone :-P. Seeing if anyone would notice.
Looks like you've been scrutinizing the render
By the way: My girlfriend is having a hard time posting here. She created her account, activated and everything, but can't seem to post... can you look into that? Her username is mel.pds . Thanks
