When and or why use mental ray

Could some one please explain when and or why to use mental ray in a project. what are the reason to use the mental ray and then why or why not use HDRI or another of the features mental ray has.

I realize you can get fantastic results with mental ray. Why then would you ever use maya software?

Maya software is easier to setup and renders faster in most cases. In some cases, mental ray doesn't render/support certain features well.

You may need a simple render that you want to get out for tests. Then use the software renderer. if you are looking for features like caustics, hdri lighting, or FG/GI then use mental ray.

so basically use mental ray when ever you can. use the software for tests?

are there any reasons you would want to do a finished product in the software render.
