What you will learn
In this tutorial, we will learn about maquette modeling workflows as well as concept drawing, sculpting, and presenting.
Throughout these lessons, we will understand the process about how to create a visual concept image, and turn it into a 3D maquette in ZBrush. We will cover everything from understanding the concept to converting it with DynaMesh, and create a presentation image for a client. A lot of conceptual modeling workflow tips will be covered in this tutorial, which can improve anyone's ZBrush modeling skills.
OK. This lesson is on geometry beard with the curvature brush approach and DynaMesh. OK, previously we made this [? sketch ?] here. We [INAUDIBLE] and add some detail on the face. And I spent a little more time on the body adding some extra detail and define the shape of muscle and proportion it a bit. So now it's time to make the beard. Before we make the beard, let's make another [INAUDIBLE] model. Just simply press the button and duplicate. And this replicates the model. So this model is gonna be the [INAUDIBLE] model. So hide the original model. And this [INAUDIBLE] model is [INAUDIBLE] lower subdivision, so it doesn't have [? any ?] [INAUDIBLE]. So that's exactly the same, but it doesn't have very [INAUDIBLE] on there. So CurveTube brush understands easily. So let's bring the CurveBrush in the brush menu. Select the CurveTube brush. And you can simply just draw the line, make the tube. Let's go back, because I forgot to press the symmetry. So let's turn symmetry and draw there again. So now you can simply make a tube on the surface. Also select the anchor. Keep moving around. And it's on the right position. It's a bit slow, but I still draw on the line. And [INAUDIBLE] gonna be there. And this is our [INAUDIBLE] model, so you don't have to worry about it. I'll leave it, because we'll change everything later on. OK. So I roughly made the shape around the beard. So this is gonna be our base model. So I change the brush [INAUDIBLE]. And a standard brush. And deselect the mask. And this has actually been grouped already and divided by color, as you see. So once you press contour and shift, then it's like the model. It hide everything except to select model. And once you contour, shape and select the model again. [INAUDIBLE] the exact opposite. There's some add on there, but when you press contour and shift and drag it, the [INAUDIBLE] all in the green area. So now [? click ?] the geometry menu. Press [? Delete Hidden. ?] So that's gonna be delete all hidden geometry. So let's go back to the [INAUDIBLE] here. So now you have the character with all subdivided history. And have a [INAUDIBLE] beard. So let's see. So you can change the shape. Let's see. So let's go to the geometry. And you can convert it to DynaMesh. So you can make the beard better. Just simply change the resolution. That's [? 128. ?] Sometimes if you need more high resolution, you can change a more higher number. But it's slow down the process. So let's convert to DynaMesh. OK. [? It's now ?] done with it. Now it's converted to DynaMesh now. We can see this is quite dense DynaMesh. So let's change to brush to clay brush. You can simply select the clay brush using your hot key or-- oh, I cannot find a clay brush. Ah, sorry. I see it right there. So select the clay brush. And let's start [INAUDIBLE] the beard. So let's [INAUDIBLE] little bit. The [? gap ?] is not really working together. Maybe just simply drag it outside. And it's gonna be merging everything together. Brush is actually working better. So really the DynaMesh treat it like a clay. And it's like you're pulling on geometry. So it's like clay to make it whatever you like. OK. So press [? three ?] [INAUDIBLE]. So press the [INAUDIBLE] brush. And simply make the shape better. OK, change the shape. And volume as well. OK. [INAUDIBLE] now looks like a beard. But let's still make the shape. OK. It's [INAUDIBLE] down longer. And now let's change the clay brush the clay shape up here better. And there's a brush called flesh brush. So let's [? define ?] the shape. This is too soft. Sorry. I always forgot. Let's select the [? curve. ?] So [INAUDIBLE] detail where the beard is gonna be. Keep [? going ?] the surface with this flesh brush. Can make the shape better. [INAUDIBLE] I'll think about it how the beard looks like. So just follow the shape. And the flesh brush just made a guideline. Basically how looks like it. So that's gonna be my basic shape of the beard. So after that, change my brush to standard brush. There we go. And make the [? volume ?] better. And there's clay brush too. So set it clay brush. And [INAUDIBLE] it together slightly. Obviously that gap is too wide. OK. So [? the shade ?] is not [? very ?] [? right. ?] So the final touch is a [? rake ?] brush. [INAUDIBLE] the [? rake ?] brush. Change it to [INAUDIBLE] scheme like on [? auto ?] [INAUDIBLE]. And now start doing the [INAUDIBLE]. [INAUDIBLE] [? rake ?] brush like this. But your hand is not really steady so just turn on the extra stroke. And turn on the [? lazy ?] brush. Or you can press [? n ?] as hot key. So [? total-- ?] oh, sorry. Too slow. With the [? lazy ?] brush you can make the line be perfect. So let's make a basic line with the [? lazy ?] brush and [? rake ?] brush. So this is more like traditional sculpting. You can use the [INAUDIBLE] for like present the sculpting with a traditional way. So let's see. The brush. Here. So we can twist it and curve it that way. So after that, you tighten up your laser brush. Oh, sorry. You tighten up your laser brush. So you do at the top. Try to make it more naturally. It's still too strong. OK. So [INAUDIBLE] the shape it right. And it's on there. So you can change the brush to the [? mover ?] brush. And make the brush more asymmetrical. This is perfectly symmetrical so [INAUDIBLE] [? over here. ?] So coming up to your symmetric curve. Symmetry. So you can actually create [INAUDIBLE] the hot key [? x, ?] or [INAUDIBLE]. So now just twist the [? thing. ?] So make the shape more asymmetrical. You don't move the brush. And you can change the shape and volume. And then we have [INAUDIBLE] to change it. And if you don't like it, [? just like ?] you can change it. And if you like it, just keep it. So shape's gonna be more like that. And you see the [? rake ?] brush is kind of disappeared because you're [? leaving ?] the [INAUDIBLE] brush exactly like a brush. And you touch it on there. So, yeah. You almost make a brush in here. Again, you can do like the same thing on here. And shorter hair. We can see the [INAUDIBLE] and there's lots of hair on there. So we can make the hair like this way. So let's bring the final version [? on edit. ?] This is the version I have. So the beard on here. And. I made a hairstyle with a CurveTube brush, this brush. So you can take the same process, just make the [INAUDIBLE] of hair on the top. And shorter hair. And the other way as well. So pretty much make the whole [? hair ?] with the brush. CurveTube brush, [? make ?] brush, and DynaMesh. That's it.
