What you will learn
In this Unity tutorial, we will learn how to effectively utilize the game engine. Over the tutorial, we will learn how to use the Unity editor interface as well as how to navigate in the scene view. From there, we will learn how to import assets and how to create prefabs. Then we will shape our level even more by adding character controllers, colliders, lights, materials and physics. We will then finish the tutorial by learning how to use scripting in order to make our level interactive.
In this lesson, we're going to go ahead and finish up the details of our level. So the first thing that I want to tackle is the actual cryopods. I want to select them and get their materials on there because they've been grey quite long enough here. So let's just select one piece of this cryopod. So let's just select this little door right here. And you can see that we can access the materials in our inspector. So let's go ahead and select this first one. And I'm going to scroll down. And I have a couple of different materials that are actually used on this object. So I want to go ahead and select this first one right here. And you'll see that this applies to the doors, and it also applies to the body, as well. So let's go to our next one. And this is actually for the window. So let's scroll down to the material for our window. Here it is. And we'll close this out. And then, we're going to select the frame here. So then, we're going to go ahead and select this texture, and we're going to select the frame texture here. Here we go. And finally, we need to select the base. And we're going to go to this texture. And we're going to select the CLR base. Here's our pod base. And let's close this out. And now, the final thing to do with our pods is we need to actually select a color for our pipe up here at the top. This is actually just a general material that we can use. So what I'm going to do is actually just use a color. So I'm going to use my eye dropper here and choose a color right on this hose. So now, that's going to blend in nice and neat there. All right, so that's the materials on our pods. Let's go ahead and do the open pod, as well. So let's go ahead and select one of the pieces on the door here. And we're going to do the exact same thing. So we're going to go ahead and go to this mains CLR closed. It's going to apply itself just like it should. And we're going to go to the window on this one. And let's go ahead and select the frame, choose that material, the CLR frame. Here we go. And then, the base. And then finally, we're going to choose the color for this. Oops, looks like we forgot the materials for these objects. Let me make sure that this-- this actually went on over here. So let's go ahead and take a look at this one. And let's go ahead and scroll down. And I think we need to actually use the closed on this. There we go. There we go. Let's use the closed on that one. OK, so now, let's go ahead and-- we've got our frame. Let's go ahead and create the material for our cylinder right here at the top. So we're just going to change that color one more time. So just click on that dropper, and then hover over your pipe. And that'll choose that color there for you. All right, so now we've got the materials ready to go for our pods. And now, we can go ahead and actually add in some more detail. So I'm going to use a couple of different props here. And you can space them out wherever you want. And I'm just going to spend some time to get that finished. So let's bring in a couple of our pipes. So I'm going to go to my meshes, and I have pipes. And I'm going to bring in my pipe front turn. So whenever this gets brought in, you'll notice I have a couple of different objects on this particular pipe here. I've got a couple of planes down at the bottom, and I've got this one large plane on the backside. And this is a good way that you can actually fake out some ambient occlusion. So it's basically just an object that we're going to texture with a shadow. And I've already got those materials already created. So let's go ahead and select this object. And let's rotate it around. And let's place it in our scene here. So what I'm going to do is actually scale it down. So let's hold down Control and scale it in all directions. And then, I'm going to move it down into my scene. I'm going to find a good place for it to go. And let's go ahead and rotate this to where it's upside down here. And let's hit Control Z. I don't think I grabbed the right axis there. Let's hold down Control and then snap it. There we go. Let's move this up to our ceiling. Now, I want to be careful because I don't want to actually make those planes right here at the end clip through my ceiling because I want them to show that shadow whenever I apply that material. Let's move this over to the side here. And you can put these anywhere you like. I'm just wanting to spend some time with you to show you how we can finish this up here. So let's go to our materials now. So let's just select one of these objects. And I'm going to go ahead and use this. And let's scroll down. And let's find that pipes material. Here it is right here. So let's go ahead and-- you know what, actually, there should be a different material. Let's actually go to our materials folder. And we should have what's called pipes AO, pipes ambient occlusion. So let me see if I can find that there. There's our lambert. And you know what? Actually, let's go ahead and create a brand new material. So this is a good place to go ahead and do that. So let's right-click on our materials. And we're going to do Create Material. And what I'm going to do is actually use what's called a transparent material. And in this case, we're going to use transparent and we're going to use to just a diffuse here. So let's go down to diffuse, and we'll apply that. And then, what we're going to do is go ahead and apply that pipes material, or that pipes texture. So with that applied there, we can see that we have our material. And it has become transparent in some of the areas. So let's go ahead and rename this material, and let's call this pipes-- oops, if I can spell correctly here-- underscore AO, so that way I know that this is my ambient occlusion material that I've created. So I'm going to click and drag this right on top of my little planes that I've got on my pipe. And we'll do this all the way through here. Make sure we get the ones up here at the top. And it's hard to see, but it's actually a shadow texture just to fake out that ambient occlusion. All right, so let's go ahead and apply our pipes material to this. So let's go ahead and go to, let's see, our pipe front turn lambert. And let's apply this to our pipe. And we may have to go ahead and apply this to every single pipe that we've got here, every section of it, just the way it came in. So let's go ahead and do so. Make sure we get all of those pieces in there. We may have to zoom in and do this a little bit better so we can actually see it. There we go. Now, I know this is a tedious process here, but this is just something that we have to do just because of the way it was imported. And I grabbed the wrong one there. I'm just going to try it again. There we go. And let's get the last piece of this here. Try this one more time. I'm grabbing the wrong one, that's why. There we go. I was grabbing the girder. I wasn't really paying attention to what I was doing. Now, you've got to be careful whenever you're working in here because sometimes you'll try to pan, and then the menu will actually switch on you. So that's what was actually happening there. OK, so once we've got this together, we can actually go ahead and actually duplicate this pipe and take care of this whole material process. So we don't have to do this every single time. So now, we've got our pipe that we've created. And we can go ahead hit Control D and duplicate this and put it in different areas of our map here. So what I'm going to do is go ahead and just hold down Control, move this over, and I'm going to actually put one on the floor. So let's just use our rotation, hold down Control, and flip this around here. Now, what I can do is go ahead and actually scale this to make it fit a little bit better in my scene seeing how it's bumping up right up against my cryo tank there. So let's hold down Control and scale it down. I'm going to just put it down on the floor. Making sure that it's low enough, but not too low to where it's covering up our ambient occlusion texture. Move this up against the wall, and there we go. So you can go ahead and add some more of those details. And now, what I want to do is go ahead and end this lesson. And we're going to go ahead and continue on in our next lesson with building this up. So I'm going to start by creating some piles of crates and barrels to really add some more effect to this level.
