What you will learn
In this Unity tutorial, we will learn how to effectively utilize the game engine. Over the tutorial, we will learn how to use the Unity editor interface as well as how to navigate in the scene view. From there, we will learn how to import assets and how to create prefabs. Then we will shape our level even more by adding character controllers, colliders, lights, materials and physics. We will then finish the tutorial by learning how to use scripting in order to make our level interactive.
In this lesson we're going to create some detail to go into our level to make it more believable and interesting. So in our last lesson we added our materials to our level. And it's looking pretty good even with just these lights in here. And we've just got these basic materials, and a basic layout. So let's start adding some detail in here to tell a story about this level. Now if I could give you one piece of advice about level design, and if it's something you really enjoy, I could just tell you go ahead and create a story for this level. So it could be an abandoned military outpost. And something's gone completely awry in this level. And that's going to give you an idea of what the textures are going to look like, what you want your props to look like, what types of props to create. And your placement. And it's just going to be really, really fun whenever you start building this level. Because you are telling a story in this level. So let's go in and start bringing in some of our props. Now like we did before, we're just going to start blocking it out. So we're going to do that with our props as well. We're going to start blocking out their placement. So let's go to our meshes folder. And go to props. And we'll see that we have several different props in here. Now what I'm going to do is start out with our cryopods. Because this is the main portion of our object here. So let's go ahead and go to cryopod closed. And this is probably one of the most interesting portions of the map. You're going to look at this and you're going to go OK, now I'm captivated into the story. What's going on here? Why are these here? So let's go ahead and drag one of these in. And you'll see that we get this gray material here. And let's go ahead and pull this down. And just fit this into our scene here. Now this object has been imported kind of large. So I wanted to bring this in and show you as you're bringing in props and details that if the size isn't exactly right, you can go ahead and rescale it inside of your scene. Now you could also go ahead and open up your 3D package. And scale it down and re-export it. And then re-import it into Unity. You could do either way. So what I'm going to do is just hold down control with my Scale Tool selected, and select this center box and scale it in all three directions. So I'm going to come down to about here. And you'll see that my scale is down to about 0.6. I'm just going to pull this up here to where it might cryopod is actually fitting right into my ceiling here. And I'm going to actually create a couple of copies of this. So I'm going to duplicate this. So Control and D. We'll hold down Control and move this out. And we'll just create a couple of these. Hitting Control D again. And then moving this to the other side. And I'll go ahead and leave these right where they're at. And I'll creates some on the other side of this room as well. So let's select these two, hold down Control and D. Move these to the other side of the room. And then let's go ahead and rotate them 180 degrees. So hold down Control. And rotate those in. We'll just pull these. And basically I want to position these right up against that wall. And I kind of want the rafters to be kind of clipping into it. So this frame is kind of clipping into our wall here. So now we have these. And let's go ahead and create one that's actually open here. So I have a cryopod open. And this is going to be the one that your character is actually coming out of in this lesson. So let's hold down Control. And scale this down. And we'll go down to that 0.6. See how we took note of that value. Let's go ahead and snap this. And drag it down, and position this up against our wall here. All right, so now we've got a couple of initial props in here. We've got them placed in nice and neat. So this is starting to look really good here. We're getting some interesting props, we're starting to build a little bit of a story with our level here. And we can even add in some more props. So I'm going to go ahead and keep going with this. So let's add in some ammo crates. And let's just drag these in. Let's go ahead and push this back. And I can go ahead and I can make duplicates of this. And I could make pre-fabs and things like that. And what I want to do is actually go ahead and stop the lesson here. Because I have some packages of these crates already built into piles. And I want to show you how we can actually reuse assets and props like this to really add some detail to our level. So we're going to go ahead and start our next lesson where we'll actually learn how to import those packages.
