Q: How is this Unity learning path different than the Unity Mobile Game Development series?
A. This learning path is focused on teaching you how to get up to speed in Unity. If you are wanting to follow along with the popular Unity Mobile Game Development series here at Digital-Tutors, it is highly recommended that you finish this learning path before starting with that series.
Q: Do I need to be a programmer to follow along with this learning path?
Q. Are there any tutorials that I should watch before starting this learning path?
A. We would recommend that you check out the Visual Guide series to become familiar with some of the terminology that you'll encounter on this learning path.
Q: What if the version of Unity in the tutorial is different than what I have? Can I still follow along?
A. Yes! While there are certainly new tools and features that get added with each new version of Unity, a majority of the core techniques taught are the same and can be transferred easily from version to version. Just keep in mind that due to file version differences it may not be possible to open project files that were created in a newer version of Unity if you're using an older version. Unfortunately there is nothing that we can do about this. Of course you can always post questions on our forums if you ever come across something that looks different in your version of Unity than in the tutorial.
Q. Can I use this learning path with the free version of Unity?
A. You certainly can! A majority of the training in this learning path is fully applicable to the free version of Unity, especially in the Beginner's Guide to Unity and Introduction to Unity. As you follow along with this learning path and get more familiar with Unity, your projects will get more complex and there are some things that are in the training that do require a Unity Pro license. Of course, you are welcome to simply skip over any of the tutorials that utilize Unity Pro if you are not yet ready to purchase a license. Just bear in mind that your projects may not come out exactly as they do in the tutorial if you skip over some of the training. To view the differences of Unity and Unity Pro, please view the Unity License Comparisons page.
Q: Can I use this learning path for learning how to create a game on my desktop or is this only for mobile devices? What are the differences?
A. Most of the core techniques and fundamentals are going to be exactly the same. For example, you still need to maintain a low polygon count. The primary difference is going to be that a mobile device is not as powerful as a desktop or gaming console, so things like your polygon count is going to have to be might tighter on a mobile device target than if you were publishing for a desktop or gaming console. The Unity training in this learning path is applicable to any of the targets that Unity can publish to.
Q. What if I have questions while going through this learning path?
A. We have set up a community specifically as a place for you to ask technical questions. Our community is frequented by the Digital-Tutors instructors, staff members, moderators and other helpful members that can answer your questions as you learn Unity. You can get to the community by clicking on the "Connect" tab at the top of the site or by clicking here.
Q: Do I have to follow along with the tutorial? Can I work on my own project?
A. The ultimate goal is to be able to transfer the techniques and tools you've learned in this learning path to your own projects. While everyone learns at a difference pace, we recommend a three-step process before trying to apply the techniques to your own projects. The first step is to watch each tutorial and take notes along the way. Secondly, watch the tutorial and follow along trying to replicate each step in the tutorial. Lastly replicate the project from the tutorial on your own trying not to watch the tutorials as much as possible. This helps to ensure that you not only are able to replicate what was taught in the tutorial but that you understand the techniques and tools that were used so you can then transfer them to your own projects.
Q. What if I don't use Unity? Can I follow along in another game engine like Unreal (UDK)?
A. We highly recommend that you use Unity while following along with this learning path. Many of the core fundamentals can be ported to another piece of software if you are familiar with that software, but if you are not extremely familiar with that software then it can quickly become overwhelming to try to port the information from Unity to another application.
Q. Where do I go after completing this learning path?
A. Once you have completed this learning path, we would recommend that you try our Unity Mobile Game Development series. In that series you will learn how you can take the knowledge you've learned with this learning path and apply it to creating an actual game.
